How to find the right Life and Mindset Coach
This is one of my favorite quotes because it sums up so perfectly what happens when we are open to opportunities without even knowing in advance what kinds of beautiful growth will happen as a result.
It reminds me of the time I hired my first life coach.
What a self-imposed mind game that was. It took me two years (and a lot of wasted time and energy) to decide! Gees. I kept justifying that I couldn’t afford it and was I really that bad off? I would rationalize that I was a smart woman and could figure it out on my own by applying what I read in books.
And there was the fact that I simply couldn’t visualize what they would help me with. Would I really be that different after coaching? And how? It was such an unknown and I was very skeptical.
And last, another big stall-out was how overwhelming I made the process of finding the right coach. Talk about freezing me into inaction! How do I choose the right coach? Where do I find them? Is phone coaching effective? Do I need a business or a life coach? What if I pick business and I really needed life? Ahhhhh! It literally made me crazy so then I would revert back to the ‘I can do this myself with books because I’m smart’ justification.
{Pausing the story! Two years of vacillating over this added up to me not growing my business, not having clarity, and definitely not making much money. So hahahaha, the joke was on me. I didn’t want to afford coaching yet I see now that it would have been the wisest investment ever. Live and learn. Now, I don’t hesitate –– when I’m stuck and need a coach I pick up that phone.}
So, I ran into a friend who told me about a Life Coach they knew locally and I decided to take that as the Universe nudging me forward so we met for a consultation. I hired him immediately for six months.
What a serious relief that was! I no longer had to continue spinning my wheels mulling it over and that freed up so much energy to start moving forward. It felt really good to turn my life over to him and allow him to guide me because back then I had a real problem with allowing anyone to help (you know…letting go of control!)
I specifically wanted him to help me gain clarity with my business and as good coaches go, he really didn’t help me much with that. Are you thinking that I’m crazy right now? How could I consider him a great coach when he didn’t directly help me with what I hired him for?
Yes, it does appear crazy until I tell the rest of the story…
A good coach listens under the surface and because they’re an impartial 3rd party they truly ‘see’ what’s going on and what we need with a hell of a lot more clarity than we do.
He saw that I wasn’t ready to grow my business because I needed to grow me first. I had many mindset blocks and head games going on that were keeping me from moving forward and he knew those needed to be addressed first.
Well, he was right. I came out of that relationship with so much more clarity and focus about me which in turn got me unstuck and allowed me to grow my business much more effectively and quickly.
I didn’t know what was missing until I found it. I love the beauty of that.

Choosing a life and mindset coach to support, mentor, and guide you is an important investment, and here are some questions to consider as you evaluate your options:
Is this person truly already living the life I aspire for myself?
Did they get to this life by actually living? (with all the messiness and growth that goes along with it)
What are their beliefs and philosophies? Is there an opportunity to uncover a new way of being that I may have never considered?
Do I like their energy, who they are, and their values?
What do former clients have to say about their experience?
Do I get a good feeling about this coach? Do they care about me and my unique needs?
